Hyundai Azera 2008

2008 Hyundai Azera
The 2008 Hyundai Azera ranks 4 out of 9 Affordable Large Cars. This ranking is based on our analysis of 48 published reviews and test drives of the Hyundai Azera, and our analysis of reliability and safety data.

The 2008 Azera delivers solid performance, a very roomy interior, a long list of safety features and an unmatched warranty. However, many consider the handling vague, and the exterior styling bland.

The 2008 Hyundai Azera is unique in this class for its balance of features and capabilities, combined with a relatively low price. The argument for the Hyundai's large car is simple: The Azera finishes in the top half of its class in our ratings in nearly every category, is available with a ten-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty and can be bought fully-equipped for under $30,000. It's a tremendous value. U.S. News reviewer Rick Newman calls the Azera a "darn good product that undercuts the competition by a couple thousand dollars or more."

Hyundai is trying a similar tactic with its upcoming Genesis sedan. The Azera is front-wheel drive, while the Genesis sends its power to the rear wheels. The two cars occupy similar space in Hyundai's lineup for a similar price, but the Azera can be had for a slightly lower investment.

For 2008, Hyundai has cut the midlevel SE trim from the Azera lineup. Buyers now choose between a relatively well-equipped base-level GLS, and a Limited trim that adds enough luxury features to allow the Azera compete with some entry-level luxury sedans. Hyundai has also addressed some complains by retuning the Azera's suspension for 2008 to improve ride and handling. If you're interested in the Azera, the Toyota Avalon and Chrysler 300 are also worth a look.

* "A handsome larger sedan that has scads of interior room, neat LED taillights and projector-beam headlamps firmly affixed on the Toyota Avalon and Nissan Maxima." -- Road and Track
* "Azera is one of the nicer midsize sedans on the market in room, comfort and quiet. Sadly, it's also one of the best kept secrets in that segment and beyond." -- Chicago Tribune
* "If you can do without a few frills, Hyundai's Azera rides with some heady competition in the near-luxury segment, but at a much lower price." -- Forbes
* " In design and styling, in creature comforts, powertrain and in safety features, Azera offers as much or more than anything else in the class, and at a lower price." -- New Car Test Drive
* "Car buyers will soon define Azera as ‘discount luxury.' In addition to a long list of familiar basics, like 16-inch wheels, a CD player, and a dual-zone A/C system, the Azera comes standard with many niceties that often add thousands to the price of similar vehicles." -- U.S. News
* "Compared to not only its premium rivals, but also to entry level luxury sedans, it is a high quality bargain." -- Motor Week

Azera Performance - 7.6 (Good)

The 2008 Hyundai Azera is among the top performers in the affordable large car class. Reviewers praise its handling, improved for 2008, and they say the 3.3-liter V6 that powers the GLS model moves the large car well, while the Limited's 3.8-liter V6 builds some fun into the equation. The Sacramento Bee says "the V-6 accelerated strongly and smoothly. The Azera was a nimble highway performer. On city streets, it steered with ease." Continue with our full Performance Review to read about improvements in suspension for 2008 that helping bring the Azera's handling in-line with the best vehicles in its class.

Azera Exterior - 7.6 (Good)
Many reviews describe the 2008 Azera's appearance as a conservative, but refined success. The Chicago Tribune says "While Toyota and Honda have gone to great lengths to ensure Camry and Accord set the benchmark for bland, Hyundai has taken pains to make Azera fashionable, from the jewel lamps upfront to eye-catching multi-spoked wheels along the sides to curvy deck lid." A few see the Azera's lines as bland and unexciting. Continue with our full Exterior Review to read both praise and criticism of the Hyundai's sheetmetal.

Azera Interior - 7.8 (Good)
Hyundai likes to promote the 2008 Azera as a near-luxury level sedan, and the automotive press sometimes concedes the comparison. Road and Track says "As you'd expect of a premium sedan, the Azera is opulent inside." However, the Azera competes in a class filled with comfortable, spacious cabins. Though the 2008 Azera's cabin earns praise, Hyundai's effort doesn't reach the top of our rankings. Continue with our full Interior Review to read how about proportions that seem to fit some drivers well, and make others feel awkward.
Azera Safety - 8.3 (Very Good)
The Azera offers a competitive suite of safety equipment, now expected in order to compete in this class. The 2008 model scored fairly well in crash testing, but didn't match its best competitors. It earned four out of five stars in government frontal-impact crash tests and received five out of five stars in side-impact crash testing for the front seat and four out of five stars for the rear seat Though the 2008 has not been tested, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety tests rated the mechanically similar 2007 Azera a top score of "Good" for passenger protection in frontal offset crashes and "Acceptable" in side-impact testing. Continue with our full Safety Review for a complete summary of the Azera's safety equipment.
Azera Reliability - 6.0 (Mediocre)
The 2008 Hyundai Azera reliability score shown is the Predicted Reliability rating provided by J.D. Power and Associates. This score is based on trending the past three years of historical initial quality and dependability data from J.D. Power's automotive studies, specifically the Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS) and the Initial Quality Study (IQS). Hyundai offers a five-year/60,000-mile new vehicle limited warranty on the 2008 Azera. The Azera also comes with a ten-year/100,000 mile powertrain warranty and five-years of 24-hour roadside assistance. The powertrain warranty is particular noteworthy. Forbes says "the Azera is covered by a warranty that puts most, if not all, of the luxury makes to shame." It may be the best argument for considering the Azera. Continue with our full Reliability Review to learn about Hyundai's increasing reputation for building solid, dependable cars -- and offering industry-leading warranty coverage to protect owners.

Hyundai Accent 2009

2009 Hyundai Accent
The 2009 Hyundai Accent gets a few powertrain tweaks designed to increase fuel economy. Otherwise, this subcompact car is largely unchanged. Accent comes as a 2-door hatchback in GS and SE trims, and as a 4-door sedan in GLS form. The sole engine is a 110-hp 1.6-liter 4-cylinder that teams with a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic transmission. Hyundai says changes to powertrain and tire management systems boost fuel economy by up to 8 percent. Available safety features include ABS, front side airbags, and curtain side airbags. Air conditioning is standard on GLS and SE, optional on GS. Power windows and locks and remote entry are standard on SE and optional on GS and GLS. SE also has a sport suspension. Accent lends its basic design to the Rio from Hyundai's Kia division, but Rio differs in features, pricing, and warranty coverage.

HUMMER H3 2008

2008 HUMMER H3
The 2008 Hummer H3 ranks 23 out of 26 Affordable Midsize SUVs. This ranking is based on our analysis of 56 published reviews and test drives of the Hummer H3, and our analysis of reliability and safety data.

The H3 demonstrates terrific off-road prowess in a distinctive, rugged package, but can't match the on-road performance or comfort of many competitors. Consequently, it ranks in the bottom half of its class.

The 2008 Hummer H3 boasts great off-road capability, but mediocre highway performance means it ranks in the bottom half of its competitive class. The H3 "may be the baby bear of its clan," says Motor Week, "but it has all the DNA of the original. Indeed, we think it is just right." New for 2008 is the Alpha trim level, which comes with a V8 engine and the H3's luxury package. The H3 line also gets more standard safety equipment, including head-curtain side air bags and electronic stability control. Though the H3 is the least expensive of the Hummers, its sticker price still commands a premium. Plus, the new Alpha costs about $8,500 more than the base H3. Though it may be worth the price for serious off-road driving enthusiasts, the H3 only ranks in the bottom half of its class when compared to other off-road SUVs.

In addition to the new performance-minded Alpha, the Hummer H3 is available as a base model (with the optional Adventure and Luxury packages) or as the H3x.

* "Plenty of room for the family and your stuff, a great off-road pedigree, and improved on-road performance comfort make the 2008 H3 Alpha one to definitely consider." -- RockCrawler.com
* "Going off-road? The H3 is a buy." -- Washington Post
* "The H3 Alpha is smooth, quiet and comfortable. It's also an ego machine that guzzles gas and is about the size of Liechtenstein. If you can afford the constant fuel bills and have a large parking space, it's the best Hummer yet." -- New York Times

H3 Performance - 7.3 (Good)
The 2008 Hummer H3 is more than adequate -- even ideal -- for off-road driving. According to Car and Driver, "Off-road, where gradual and precise throttle response is usually far more important than power (particularly when a low crawl ratio is included), the H3 is just right." However, the H3 is less impressive on normal terrain, which is why its performance ranks in the bottom half of the class. For 2008, the H3 adds a new trim level, the Alpha, with a more powerful V8. Continue with our full Performance Review to learn whether or not the Alpha's performance upgrades are worth the extra bucks.
H3 Exterior - 7.9 (Good)
Although smaller than other Hummer SUVs, the 2008 H3 still has an appealing military-transport appearance that ranks in the middle of its class. The Washington Post says the H3 has a high "head-turning quotient," later writing: "Even avowed SUV haters took time to eyeball this one." Continue with our full Exterior Review to learn how the H3's exterior trims differ, or check out our Photo Gallery to see it for yourself.

H3 Interior - 7.4 (Good)
The 2008 Hummer H3's well-received cabin has a modern appeal as opposed to a luxurious one. "The interior design is just about the best on a GM truck in a long time," says Motor Trend. "The simple center stack and superior materials on knobs and flush surfaces set a new standard for Hummer." Still, the interior can't compete with the H3's more refined rivals and ranks in the bottom half of the class. Continue with our Interior Review to learn why reviewers aren't impressed with the H3's seating positions or cargo space, or check out our interior photos.

H3 Safety - 7.3 (Good)
The 2008 Hummer H3 receives very good scores in front and side crash tests conducted by the federal government, but doesn't fare as well in insurance industry testing. Continue with our full Safety Review to learn about the H3's rear visibility issues and why you may want to opt for the rearview monitor.

H3 Reliability - 4.0 (Mediocre)

This score is based on trending the past three years of historical initial quality and dependability data from J.D. Honda CR-V 2009

2009 Honda CR-V
The 2009 Honda CR-V is largely unchanged. This five-passenger compact SUV is available with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. Trim levels include LX, EX, and top-line EX-L with leather upholstery. All have a 166-hp 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine and a 5-speed automatic transmission. Maximum towing capacity is 1500 lb. Honda Civic Hybrid 2009

2009 Honda Civic Hybrid
The 2008 Honda Civic Hybrid ranks 3 out of 34 Affordable Small Cars. This ranking is based on our analysis of 29 published reviews and test drives of the Honda Civic Hybrid, and our analysis of reliability and safety data.

The Civic Hybrid provides similar qualifications to the popular Toyota Prius while offering the conventional styling of a gas-engine sedan. But many reviewers report its around-town driving is weak, even for a hybrid vehicle.

The 2008 Honda Civic Hybrid garners solid praise for its value, sleek, futuristic redesign and fuel-sipping habits. In both the small car and hybrid car rankings, the sedan receives high scores for its conventional exterior style, its high-quality cabin and for its outstanding safety. But there are many reviews who report the Civic Hybrid's performance is underwhelming -- even as a hybrid vehicle, it does not provide as much power on the highway as expected.

The Civic Hybrid comes only as a four-door sedan. The 2008 model of the Civic Hybrid carries over from 2007 virtually unchanged, save for a tire pressure monitoring system. If you're in the market for a hybrid vehicle, also consider the Toyota Camry Hybrid or the Toyota Prius. If you're interested in an affordable small car, consider the gas-engine Honda Civic, or the Honda Fit.

* "The Honda Civic Hybrid is one of the best hybrids available, with an affordable price, excellent driving dynamics, and fuel economy matched by few other models." -- Forbes
* "The Civic hybrid relies on a simpler technology than the rival Toyota Prius and doesn't run in pure-electric mode, but its gasoline-electric powertrain still yields 40-50 mpg in economy and the Civic is far more frisky to drive. Want to be green and enjoy the drive? Go for the Civic." -- Car and Driver
* "Honda's reputation for practical economy is shown in the Civic Hybrid, well-built and simply designed to sip fuel. Interior tech options are usefully done, making this Honda a great commuter sedan." -- CNET
* "The Civic Hybrid's efficiency and environmental benefits are undeniable. Add in spaciousness, fun factor, and equipment level, and there's your value, folks. High, as in hybrid." -- About.com
* "It's an ideal first car for a teen driver, and it's likewise ideal for retired seniors on fixed incomes. It's all very impressive." -- Sacramento Bee
* "Civic Hybrid drivers pay a price for being able to thumb their noses at Big Oil and help save the planet -- in higher purchase price and lower performance." -- Newsday

Civic-Hybrid Performance - 6.3 (Mediocre)
Some say the 2008 Honda Civic Hybrid's ride is similar to the conventional Civic's. But there are many who say power is lacking, even for a hybrid model.

Civic-Hybrid Exterior - 8.1 (Very Good)
Most appreciate that the Honda Civic Hybrid mirrors the styling of the gas-engine Civic. Forbes says the Hybrid "looks almost identical to the conventional gas-powered sedan. Its cab-forward design pushes the passenger compartment as far to the front of the vehicle as possible. The design features bold front-end styling with a steeply raked windshield and sweeping roofline." Check out the Honda Civic Hybrid Photo Gallery to see images of the raked windshield, or continue with our full Exterior Review for other auto writers' views on the Civic Hybrid's appearance.

Civic-Hybrid Interior - 7.6 (Good)
The five-seater 2008 Civic Hybrid is still a carry-over from the remodeled 2006 version that many critics gave a warm welcome. CNET reports the Civic's cabin gives "the impression of forward thinking thanks to some unconventional split-level gauge placement and the two-spoke steering wheel," then later adds, "The front seats proved comfortable and supportive, if slightly firm, over the course of the trip." Check out the Honda Civic Hybrid Photo Gallery for up-close images of the sedan's split-level dashboard, or continue with our full Interior Review to find out how other reviewers jive with the cabin's unconventional styling.

Civic-Hybrid Safety - 9.8 (Excellent)
The 2008 Civic Hybrid provides several standard safety features and receives solid ratings in both government and insurance industry crash tests. Continue with our full Safety Review to learn more about Honda's "Safety for Everyone" initiative.

GMC Sierra 1500 Classic Hybrid 2009

2009 GMC Sierra 1500 Classic Hybrid
General Motors is spreading its two-mode hybrid system across its truck lineup. At the 2008 Chicago auto show, the system finds its way into the GMC Sierra Crew Cab pickup, giving it 40-percent better fuel economy in the city cycle and 25-percent better on the highway than the gas-engine Sierra, while maintaining a 6100-pound towing rating.

The Sierra Hybrid sports a so-called two-mode hybrid engineered in a joint venture between General Motors, Chrysler, Daimler, and BMW. Outfitted with a 6.0-liter V-8 engine and GM's version of the hybrid system, the Sierra Hybrid will be able to run on either its electric power or its gasoline power or both.

The hybrid truck will also use its electric power as an assist to its V-8 engine under heavy engine loads — in passing, towing, and climbing, for example. At speeds of up to 30 mph, the Sierra Hybrid can work in electric-only mode. The hybrid powertrain is also outfitted with cylinder deactivation technology, which helps dampen fuel consumption. Cruising range will be about 500 miles, GM says.

The two-mode system is expected to make its way into most of GM's full-size truck lineup, but the basic idea is scalable to vehicles of most any size, GM says. Minor aerodynamic tweaks help further improve the Hybrid's fuel economy; its battery pack is located behind the rear seats.

Dual front and curtain airbags and stability control will be standard on the Sierra Hybrid.

Sales begin in the fourth quarter of this year, and the Hybrid will come in the Crew Cab body style with rear- and four-wheel drive.

GMC Sierra 1500 2009

2009 GMC Sierra 1500
The 2009 GMC Sierra 1500 lineup gains a gas/electric hybrid model, a new 6-speed automatic transmission, and some new features. This large pickup truck offers regular, extended, and crew cab body styles. It borrows its basic design from the Chevrolet Silverado 1500. Extended cabs have rear-hinged back doors that don't open independently of the fronts. Regular cabs can seat up to three passengers, while extendeds and crews can seat up to six. Three bed lengths are available: the 5-foot-8-inch short bed; 6-foot-6-inch standard bed; and 8-foot long bed. The 2009 GMC Sierra offers two interiors, dubbed "pure pickup" and "luxury inspired."

Available engines, depending on cab/bed configuration, are a 195-hp 4.3-liter V6; 295-hp 4.8-liter V8; 315-hp 5.3-liter V8; 367-hp 6.0-liter V8; and 403-hp 6.2-liter V8. Certain versions of the 5.3-liter V8 and all 6.2 V8 engines can run on E85 ethanol-blended fuel. The 5.3 and 6.0 V8 engines come with GM's Active Fuel Management cylinder deactivation. V6, 4.8 V8, and most 5.3 V8 versions have a 4-speed automatic transmission. Available on 5.3 V8 Crew Cab as well as the 6.0 V8 is a 6-speed automatic. Some rear-drive Sierras with the 5.3-liter V8 and 6-speed automatic can be equipped as the XFE, which stands for Xtra Fuel Economy. XFE has specific wheels and tires, along with other mechanical and aerodynamic treatments. GM claims an increase in fuel economy of up to 7 percent over non-XFE versions. Unique to the Sierra lineup is the Denali. It's a crew cab with the 6.2-liter V8 and specific interior and exterior trim. Maximum towing capacity is 10,700 lb.

The 2009 GMC Sierra 1500 Hybrid has a 6.0-liter V8 engine that pairs with an electric motor for 332 hp total. It can run on one or both of its power sources, depending on driving demands, and requires no plug-in charging. The Hybrid uses a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). The Hybrid's maximum towing capacity is 6100 lb.

Rear-wheel drive is standard across the board. Two 4-wheel-drive systems are offered: a part-time setup that should not be left engaged on dry pavement, and GM's Autotrac that can. Both include a low-range gear for off-roading. All-wheel drive is available on the Denali. Sierra is available with several different suspensions. The Z83 and Z85 setups are designed for ride comfort. The Z60 is a street performance suspension, and the Z71 is for off-road use. Available safety features include ABS, traction control, antiskid system, and curtain side airbags. Available features include a navigation system, remote engine start, and a new-for-2009 wireless cell phone link.

GMC Envoy 2009

2009 GMC Envoy
The 2008 GMC Envoy ranks 24 out of 26 Affordable Midsize SUVs. This ranking is based on our analysis of 47 published reviews and test drives of the GMC Envoy, and our analysis of reliability and safety data.

The Envoy delivers a spacious interior and outstanding towing capacity. However, it falls short of the handling, reliability and value offered by competitors and ranks near the bottom of its class.

The 2008 GMC Envoy was launched in 2002 to replace the long-running Jimmy. The Envoy receives minor changes for 2008, including the addition of standard XM Satellite Radio and head-curtain airbags. Reviews say it provides a comfortable ride, but complain that its handling and interior quality are below-average. Forbes advises buyers to keep looking if they "want something sportier, more stylish or more reliable." Despite its all-terrain abilities, the Envoy ranks near the bottom of the class when compared only to other off-road SUVs.

The GMC Envoy has three available trims: the base SLE, the SLT, and the top-of-the-line Denali. All models are available as a 2WD or as a 4WD.

* "The current Envoy represents a vast improvement over its predecessor, but ultimately, it doesn't measure up to competitors. While its handsome exterior and roomy interior may attract consumers, GMC needs to come up with a better compromise between cushy ride quality and confident handling; specifically, it should lose some of the former to gain some of the latter." -- Carz Unlimited
* "More than a mere lifestyle accessory, the Envoy proved to have the goods over its year-long evaluation, whatever the chore or journey." -- Motor Trend

Envoy Performance - 7.1 (Good)
The 2008 GMC Envoy receives mixed performance reviews, with New Car Test Drive noting it is "well-engineered and enjoyable to drive, stable and responsive with good brakes and a superb inline six-cylinder engine." However, complaints about the four-speed automatic transmission, sloppy handling, and low fuel economy put the Envoy's performance near the bottom of its class. Continue with our full Performance Review to learn whether or not you should choose the more powerful V8 engine option.

Envoy Exterior - 8.8 (Very Good)
The 2008 GMC Envoy's exterior styling ranks near the top of the class. "Envoy has conservative, upmarket styling, yet has a masculine look that says it's ready to tackle the tough jobs," says Autobytel. "It looks more sophisticated than the TrailBlazer."

Envoy Interior - 7.5 (Good)
The 2008 GMC Envoy gets a good score for its interior, but its cabin still ranks in the bottom half of the class since many of its competitors offer a more refined design. Though the base model probably provides enough equipment for most buyers, note that you'll have to trade up to the other models if you want the optional navigation system or rear-seat DVD system. "On the positive side, loaded up the Envoy can feel as luxurious as almost any passenger car," says About.com. "Most times, it won't even feel like you're driving a truck." Continue with our Interior Review to learn whether those pricey features are worth the money, or check out our interior photos.
Envoy Safety - 6.5 (Mediocre)
The 2008 GMC Envoy gets a mediocre safety score partially because of its somewhat unfavorable crash test ratings. Standard safety equipment includes StabiliTrak electronic stability control and a tire pressure monitoring system. Envoy Reliability - 4.0 (Mediocre)
The 2008 GMC Envoy reliability score shown is the Predicted Reliability rating provided by J.D. Power and Associates. The Escape is available with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. Available safety features include ABS, traction control, antiskid system, curtain side airbags, and front side airbags. Also available are leather upholstery, heated front seats, rear obstacle detection, and a navigation system.

Ford Edge 2009

2009 Ford Edge
The 2009 Ford Edge adds a new Sport model to its lineup. This five-passenger crossover SUV is available with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. SE, SEL, and Limited trims are joined by the Sport model for 2009. All have a 265-hp 3.5-liter V6 engine and a 6-speed automatic transmission. Sport models have standard 20-inch wheels or available 22-inch wheels, unique body panels, dual exhaust, specific seats, and unique interior trim. Maximum towing capacity is 3500 lb. Available safety features include ABS, traction control, antiskid system, front side airbags, and curtain side airbags. Other available features include a power tailgate, power-folding rear seatbacks, 20-inch wheels, and the Vista Roof, a sliding glass sunroof that covers both the front and rear seats. Ford's Sync, a software system that offers voice-activated control of cell phones and digital music players, is standard on Limited and Sport and optional on SEL. Note that Lincoln sells a luxury-trimmed version of the Edge called the MKX. The evaluation of the 2009 Ford Edge Sport is based on preview test drives.

Ford Fiesta 2011

2011 Ford Fiesta
Fuel-stingy minicars are back in vogue, thanks to escalating gas prices. Ford has long promised such a car for its U.S. lineup. In fact, it had one ready several years back, but canceled it on learning the Honda Fit and Toyota Yaris would show up.

Since then, the Blue Oval has been working on what it thinks will be a more competitive minicar. Though Ford isn’t talking timetable or specifications yet, the three Verve concepts, unveiled at the 2007 Frankfurt Auto Show, 2007 Guangzhou Motor Show, and 2008 Detroit Auto Show suggest the showroom version is well on the road to completion. So does the debut of a new Mazda 2, which will parent the U.S. baby as well as a redesign of Ford’s popular European Fiesta. Right now, sources predict the American version--which will be badged Fiesta--will arrive in 2010 as a 2011 model.

The 2011 Ford Fiesta is another “world car” project a la Ford’s 1981 Escort and 2000 Focus. Like the original VW Beetle, the idea is a basic design that can be built and sold profitably the world over, because one car serving many markets drastically cuts development costs and raises profit potential. That’s why General Motors still dabbles with world cars, too.

In the past, though, Detroit “world cars” ended up with so many regional design and engineering changes that economies of scale were diminished, if not erased. The Focus is one example. At first, the U.S. and European models were quite similar. Then Ford Europe did a 2005 redesign that U.S. marketers deemed too costly. In other words, a Euro-based Focus would have been priced out of its U.S. market slot. Which is why our Focus still uses the original design, already paid for, albeit heavily updated for 2008.

Ford says Focus will be a “world car” again in its next incarnation, expected around 2011. There’s not much choice. Ford is running very low on cash and must leverage its global resources--that timeworn Detroit cliché--to get the most new model bang for the bucks it has. That’s why Ford CEO Alan Mullaly is busy spearheading a global product plan that aims for big savings by greatly trimming the number of platforms and parts in Ford Motor’s worldwide inventory. The increased sharing won’t be confined to small cars, either. Ford also plans to merge two different midsize sedans, the American Fusion and European Mondeo, into a single basic design, with only modest tailoring for various markets.

All this explains why the 2011 Ford Fiesta will be closely related to the next-generation Fiesta, but possibly sourced from low-wage Brazil or Mexico to achieve a competitive El Norte price. And because Ford now assigns small-car development to Japanese affiliate Mazda, which is plenty experienced that way, the Fiesta will be derived from the recently-released second-generation Mazda 2. That model isn’t coming here, but its good U.K. and Continental notices bode well for the North American Ford.

The 2011 Ford Fiesta will share a new B2E corporate platform with the Mazda 2, but have different styling (penned by Ford designers in Europe) and perhaps different powertrains too. It will look more conservative than the Verve concept, which Ford says suggests the general “design language” of the production car. But the concept is certainly expressive, as is the wedgy Mazda 2, so the showroom Fiesta won’t be another plain two-box appliance like the Fiesta sold here way back in 1977-1980.

Size wise, the 2011 Ford Fiesta should be close to the Fit, Yaris, Chevrolet Aveo and other so-called “B-Class” minicars, but a generous wheelbase versus overall length should make for a surprisingly roomy four-seater, judging by the Mazda 2. It’s front-wheel drive, of course, and a 4-door sedan body style is assured for the U.S. Two- and 4-door hatchbacks are likely for Europe and possibly for our side of the pond as well.

Powertrains should come from the Mazda 2, which in various markets offers twincam 4-cylinder engines of 1.3 and 1.5 liters. We’d guess the U.S. 2011 Ford Fiesta will get the 1.5 at least, or perhaps a 1.8-liter enlargement providing the extra low-end torque that’s always so helpful for U.S. driving conditions. Transmissions should comprise a 5-speed manual and an optional 5-speed automatic, also per the 2. Standard equipment should include antilock brakes, front torso side airbags, and curtain side airbags. Traction control will certainly be available, maybe even standard. Stability control is a likely option, as it is on the Mazda.
2010 Ford Fiesta
The 2011 Ford Fiesta will likely be powered by a 1.5-liter or 1.8-liter 4-cylinder. The European-market 2008 Fiesta is pictured here.

A Notable Feature of the 2011 Ford Fiesta

Depending on marketers’ courage, the 2011 Ford Fiesta may offer upscale extras like sport suspension, 16- or 17-inch tires to replace standard 15s, power windows, keyless power door locks, perhaps even a navigation system. The options list will almost certainly show the new Ford Sync system for voice-activated control of cell phones and portable music players, if only to court the youth market. An available 5-speed automatic would be a competitive advantage among B-Class cars, where 4-speed transmissions are the rule so far. Let’s also note that the latest Mazda 2 weighs some 220 pounds less than the previous version, which bodes well for both performance and fuel economy in the 2011 Ford Fiesta.

Buying Advice for the 2011 Ford Fiesta

B-Class competition is heating up fast. Suzuki now offers sedan and hatchback versions of its little SX4; Toyota’s Scion brand has replaced its small xA hatchback with the more-refined xD; and 2009 brings a new, slightly larger Honda Fit with fresh styling, better performance and more interior space. The Toyota Yaris will also be tweaked before its expected redesign for model-year 2012. And Korean brands Hyundai and Kia won’t be idle. There’s also the prospect of a low-cost Chinese-sourced mini from newly independent Chrysler, though its timing is still a bit murky. With all this, the 2011 Ford Fiesta will have a lot to contend with, but it should be up to it, assuming the well-received Mazda 2 is any guide.

2011 Ford Fiesta Release Date: Ford isn’t talking, as we said, but most sources except an on-sale date in the first half of calendar 2010.

2011 Ford Fiesta First Test Drive: Assuming the above timetable holds, media previews should be scheduled for fall 2009.

2011 Ford Fiesta Prices: They’re obviously a long way from being decided, but the 2011 Ford Fiesta could well displace the bottom-end versions of the compact Focus. We’d look prices to start at around $12,000 and range up to $16,000 loaded. Currency exchange rates between now and intro time will loom large for Ford in determining the final numbers.

Ferrari 612 Scaglietti 2007

2007 Ferrari 612 Scaglietti
The 2007 Ferrari 612 Scaglietti sees no major changes from last year. This four-passenger, 2-door coupe is Ferrari's flagship car. The 612 uses a 532-hp 5.75-liter V12 engine that teams with a 6-speed manual transmission. Optional is Ferrari's F1A sequential manual transmission (SMT) that uses a small console stick to engage reverse and drive. Shifting is done through steering wheel paddles, but the transmission can be set to shift like an automatic. Standard safety equipment includes: ABS, traction control, and an antiskid system. The antiskid system has driver-selectable settings to limit its intervention during high-performance driving. Neither front side airbags nor curtain side airbags are available. An optional GTB package includes uprated sport suspension, specific exhaust tuning, and carbon ceramic brakes designed to minimize heat during panic stops. This evaluation is based on preview test drives.

Ferrari 430 2007

2007 Ferrari 430
The F430 replaced the F360 in late 2005 and the current model is slated for an update in 2008. Changes for 2007 to Ferrari's two-seat exotic sports car are minimal. As before, the F430 is available in both coupe and Spyder body styles. All versions are powered by a 4.3-liter V-8 developing 383 horsepower. Standard versions come equipped with a six-speed manual transmission while F1 variants use a race-style "clutchless" manual transmission which uses computer controls to engage and disengage the clutch; the driver has full manual control of upshifts and downshifts, which are actuated by paddle shifters on the steering wheel. There is also an electronically controlled "E-diff" rear differential, which manages torque output under full throttle for enhanced control. Challenge models are track-oriented and come with carbon-ceramic brakes, Challenge Stradale lightweight rims and carbon fiber interior trim. All models get dual-zone climate control, anti-lock brakes, traction and stability control.

2007 Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano
Before our eagle-eyed readers start firing letters off to our editors, let us be clear that we know the Enzo is the fastest and most powerful sports car ever to emerge from the house that Enzo Ferrari built. That said, if you’re talking “reasonable” price and “high” volume — all relative terms, of course — it would likely be hard to beat the new F599 GTB Fiorano, the long-awaited replacement for the 575M Maranello.

Hard as it might imagine, the new sports coupe might actually qualify as a daily driver, as a factory team set out to demonstrate by driving a pair of F599s all the way from the far end of Brazil all the way to New York City, where they wrapped up the Panamerica 20,000 earlier this month.

The sleek shape of the new coupe sweeps from the low, aggressive nose across a bulging hoodline, and back to its broad, rear fenders. The shape is visually intimidating, and was heavily influenced by the aerodynamic demands of high-speed driving. The flying buttresses help improve downforce, something quite useful when you’re approaching a top speed of “over 205” mph.

Under the Fiorano’s curvaceous hood, in a mid-front configuration, sits a 611-horsepower, 48-valve, 6.0-liter V-12 — a retuned version of the Enzo engine. That V-12 is, by itself, awe-inspiring, but even more impressive is the six-speed electro-hydraulic transmission it’s mated to. There are a growing number of these auto-shifted manuals on the market, but no one seems to have gotten it quite as right as Ferrari has with its Formula 1–inspired gearbox. The F1-Superfast can shift in as little as 100 milliseconds — barely the blink of an eye. That’s significantly faster than with previous Ferraris, and compares with shift times of 50 milliseconds in a Ferrari F1 racer.

The automaker’s numbers suggest the F599 will outperform that other classic Ferrari supercar, the F40, launching from 0-60 in about 3.5 seconds, “making it the fastest production car we’ve built,” notes a Ferrari official. “I know that’s confusing, but we consider the Enzo a ‘limited-production’ car.”

As you’d expect, the Fiorano offers an extensive array of performance and creature comfort options, ranging from customized exterior paint colors to F1-derived ceramic brakes. Expect to shell out at least $260,000 — or more — for a well-equipped one. That is, of course, when you can get your hands on one. The waiting line, according to Ferrari officials, is running at least two years.

Ferrari 612 Scaglietti 2008

2008 Ferrari 612 Scaglietti
The 2008 Ferrari 612 Scaglietti is largely unchanged. This four-passenger, 2-door coupe is Ferrari's flagship car. The 612 uses a 540-hp 5.75-liter V12 engine that teams with a 6-speed manual transmission. Optional is Ferrari's 6-speed F1A automated-manual transmission that uses a small console stick to engage reverse and drive. Shifting is done through steering wheel paddles, but the transmission can be set to shift like an automatic. Available safety features include ABS, traction control, and an antiskid system.

Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano 2008

2008 Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano

Vehicle Overview
The Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano borrows its name from the test track where Ferrari tests both its road cars and Formula 1 racers, and it's designed to bring F1 to the streets.

Exterior
The long hood and short rear deck call to mind the 1971 Ferrari 365 GTC4 — called the Daytona by many. With its sweeping curves, air ducts galore and round taillamps, it's likely one would identify the 599 GTB Fiorano as a Ferrari even without the chrome prancing horse on the hood. It is unfortunate, however, that the headlights bring to mind the narrow, long design that Infiniti has been using for some years.

Interior
The 599 GTB Fiorano interior will let drivers believe they're F1 racers if they wish, but they won't feel as if they're strapped into a Spartan racetrack beast. There's tons of leather, with a lot of carbon fiber accents on the seats, doors and dash. The seats have huge bolsters and cutouts for a four-point racing harness.

What isn't leather or carbon fiber is likely brushed aluminum, so there's a nice mix of materials and textures. The steering wheel is loaded with controls, similar to an F1 racecar's wheel. Drivers can choose which setting they want for the vehicle dynamic control system — which incorporates suspension, traction control and gearbox settings. There's an engine-start button and shift paddles behind the wheel.

Under the Hood
Ferrari calls the 599 GTB Fiorano a front-mid-engine design, meaning the engine is mounted farther back in the chassis than in a pure front-engine car. Still, the engine is accessed from a front hood. The power plant is a 65-degree V-12 that's 5.99 liters (hence the car's 599 name) that makes 448 pounds-feet of torque at 5,600 rpm. It's limited to a maximum of 8,400 rpm.

The power is routed through a six-speed gearbox. The shift patterns can be changed to better meet slippery or dry conditions.

Safety
Traction and stability control are the highlights here. The F1-Trac system monitors the speed of front and rear wheels, predicts the maximum amount of grip and reacts accordingly. Ferrari claims the system increases acceleration by 20 percent over traditional traction and stability control systems, and the magnetic-fluid suspension is designed to reduce body roll and provide the driver with greater control as well.

A Racing and Track option package, which includes upgraded carbon-ceramic brakes, a four-point racing harness and roll bar, is also available.

Ferrari 430 2008

2008 Ferrari 430
Lightweight, simple and striking with a distinctive engine and exhaust sound: every last detail of the Ferrari 430 Scuderia exudes uncompromising sportiness as a direct result of its close links to the world of racing, which is reflected in the car's name: "Scuderia". Seven-times World Champion Michael Schumacher was also involved in the car's development, with the result that the most advanced single-seater technology is now available to Ferrari's sportiest and most passionate clients. With a dry weight of 2775 lb (1250 kg) and 510 hp delivered at 8500 rpm by its naturally aspirated 4308 cm3 V8 engine, the Ferrari 430 Scuderia boasts an extraordinarily low weight-power ratio of just 2.45 kg/hp, which allows it to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.6 seconds. It can also complete a lap at Fiorano in a time comparable to that of the Ferrari Enzo, the Ferrari that has come to epitomise Maranello's philosophy of transferring F1 content to its road cars.

Thanks to its sophisticated aerodynamics, F1-SuperFast2 gearbox and E-Diff coupled with the sophisticated F1-Trac traction control system, this sporty new mid-rear engined berlinetta combines ultra-nimble handling with blisteringly fast acceleration. The result? Absolutely superlative driving pleasure both on the road and on the track.

ENGINE AND ENGINE SOUND

The Ferrari 430 Scuderia's engine is an evolution of the Ferrari F430's 90° V8 which features a number of modifications to boost its specific power output from 114 hp/litre to 118 hp/litre. The inlet ducts and exhaust system have been optimised, most notably through the adoption of the exhaust geometries derived from the Ferrari F430 Challenge and the use of carbon-fibre on the intake manifold and for the filter housing to aid weight reduction.

Thanks to Ferrari's Formula 1 experience, the Ferrari 430 Scuderia's ignition system boasts special coils and, for the first time on a market-targeted car, a dedicated CPU capable of monitoring the ionising currents generated inside the combustion chamber between the spark plug electrodes. This means that every single sparking detonation is detected for every cylinder and sparking is faster and more accurate across the board.

The Ferrari 430 Scuderia's compression ratio has also been increased to 11.88:1, thanks in part to a new piston design.

Particular attention was paid to achieving just the right sound from the engine and exhaust as this has always been one of the real trademarks of every Prancing Horse car. Cutting-edge calculation tools were employed to optimise the Ferrari 430 Scuderia's intake and exhaust systems and sound damping, with the result that the exhaust and engine sound inside the cabin is clear, powerful and particularly thrilling in full acceleration.

F1-SUPERFAST2 GEARBOX

The F1-SuperFast2 is an evolution of the F1 gearbox used on all of Ferrari's models and reduces gear-shifting times to just 60 ms, the fastest time of any of the models in the Prancing Horse range, the lowest overall of any automated-manual gearbox. Significantly, Ferrari calculates the gear changing time according to the acceleration gap, not just the time it takes to engage the gear. The various stages are implemented in parallel (non-sequentially). In the case of the F1-SuperFast2, genuinely innovative integrated engine and gearbox management programmes allow the combined disengaging/engaging of the gears to take place partly in parallel with letting the clutch in and out.

E-DIFF2: E-DIFF WITH F1-TRAC

The E-Diff2 (which is integrated with the gearbox) is one of the primary components which clearly demonstrate the Ferrari 430 Scuderia's links to the track. In use for many years now in Formula 1, it is integrated with the car's stability control system.

The Ferrari 430 Scuderia is the first high performance road car after the F430 to sport an electronic differential. Torque is continuously distributed between the wheels via two sets of friction discs (one for each driveshaft) controlled by a hydraulic actuator.

The amount of torque actually transmitted to the driven wheels depends on driving conditions and brings considerable advantages in terms of performance, direction stability, active safety and handling feedback.

The F1-Trac traction control system, which is also derived from Ferrari's F1 experience, ensures that even more drivers will be able to extract the maximum performance from the car, thanks to the exceptional cornering, safety and stability it offers. Introduced for the first time on a road car with the Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano, it is faster and more precise than a traditional traction control system and optimises traction by modulating power delivery to help maintain the desired vehicle trajectory. The system estimates the maximum available grip thanks to continual monitoring of the relative speed of the wheels.

The integrated E-Diff and F1-Trac systems offers 40% more acceleration out of corners than a traditional traction and stability control system.

RACING MANETTINO

The manettino has already featured in several of Ferrari's road cars but the Ferrari 430 Scuderia features the special Racing version which puts the emphasis firmly on track-specific sporty driving and provides the driver with even more choice in terms of the car set-up. With this in mind, the ICE setting available with the F430 has been removed and a new CT- (Traction Control Off) setting has been introduced. This deactivates the car's traction control, but unlike the CST position, retains the safety of the car's stability control system to ensure a level of safety is maintained.

Another novelty with the Ferrari 430 Scuderia is a button on the centre console which allows the suspension to be controlled separately from the predefined manettino strategy. This allows the driver can maintain maximum performance even on irregular road surfaces.

Michael Schumacher made a particularly valuable contribution to this area of the car's development. In fact. he and the car development team worked together to ensure that the Ferrari 430 Scuderia delivers both exceptional performance and fantastic driving pleasure which is within reach of non-professional drivers.

BRAKES

The Ferrari 430 Scuderia boasts a specific braking system featuring CCM (carbon ceramic material) discs with specific dimensions to cope with the car's increased performance.

The front discs are now 18 mm larger than those on the F430 and are designed to dissipate the extra heat created by the higher performance and are even more hard-wearing for greater efficiency. These components, together with 6-pot calipers, guarantee blistering performance at all times and, equally importantly, consistently efficient braking during prolonged track use.

AERODYNAMICS

The Ferrari 430 Scuderia's external styling has been honed to improve its aerodynamic efficiency by increasing overall downforce whilst still retaining the same drag values as the Ferrari F430. The aerodynamic efficiency of the newly-styled rear diffuser has been enhanced by the addition of a revised profile for spoiler at the rear of the engine cover and by the large venturis that run from the front wheel houses to the rear bumpers, achieving the patented "Base Bleed" effect developed by Ferrari as part of the Ferrari FXX project. The Base Bleed effect has the double advantage of reducing the pressure in the rear wheel arch, thereby increasing downforce and lowering drag by blowing the car's "wake".

Furthermore, the new lower sill profiles ensure a more uniform distribution of air over the lower parts to ensure uniform distribution of the vertical load between the front and the rear of the car.

STYLING AND PERSONALISATION

The Ferrari 430 Scuderia's ultra-sporty character and blistering performance have led to the redesign of many of its exterior and interior styling features. This was done to give the F430-inspired model its own strong personality and to further enhance the aerodynamics of what is a very extreme car. The modifications made to the exterior focus on increasing downforce. In-depth research went into reducing the car's weight and has led to extensive use of carbon-fibre, including some of the bodywork components.

The cabin has been inspired by racing and, once again, the emphasis has been on weight reduction and using technical materials where possible.

The new "Super Racing" seat boasts an all-carbon-fibre structure and is available in several different sizes as well as being manually adjustable, including a recline adjustment for the seat back. The Carrozzeria Scaglietti Personalisation programme has also been enhanced to meet the Ferrari 430 Scuderia's specific requirements as well. The Racing and Track area, in particular, now offers carbonfibre kits for the Ferrari 430 Scuderia to enhance the message that this is a lean, track-focused driver's car. The headlamp assembly, engine cover, front spoiler, side sill kick panels and diffuser are all available in this high tech material. There is also now a choice of wheel rim colours and a specially designed carbon-fibre helmet is available to order.

Dodge Durango Hemi Hybrid 2009

2009 Dodge Durango Hemi Hybrid
Chrysler has pulled the wraps off its upcoming Dodge Durango HEMI Hybrid and Chrysler Aspen HEMI Hybrid models.

In the Durango and Aspen hybrids, the new hybrid powertrain incorporates Chrysler's 5.7-liter HEMI V-8, also featuring the automaker's Multi-Displacement System, which shuts down half of the engine's cylinders during low-load conditions such as coasting or low-speed cruising. Together, the V-8 and electrical motor system produce 385 horsepower.

The so-called two-mode hybrid system employed in the Durango and Aspen, developed in conjunction with General Motors, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz at the jointly operated Hybrid Development Center in Troy, Michigan — and similar to the one being used in the Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon hybrids — is a 'full-hybrid' one, meaning that in addition to turning the V-8 off completely at stoplights, it can use the electric-motor system to propel the vehicle alone without the gasoline engine for short, low-speed distances.

All the components of the system, including electric motors, the transmission, the battery system, energy management devices, and system control units were developed at the center, and the electric motor system and transmission were designed to fit in the packaging space of a conventional automatic transmission. The modular design employs electric motors that transfer torque directly to a series of gears in the four-speed automatic transmission, as commanded by a control unit, for seamless mode transfers between electric and gas power.

The 300-volt battery pack, which is charged during braking and deceleration and maintained in a particular range of charge by a sophisticated management system, is packaged so as to not compromise passenger space. Under the hood there is a rectifier to convert the AC current to DC for standard 12-volt vehicle accessories.

At 5553 pounds, the Aspen HEMI Hybrid tips the scales at about 500 pounds more than the Chrysler Aspen Limited 4WD. Towing capacity for the non-hybrid model maxes out at 8950 pounds, but the Hybrid model is still approved for trailer towing and good for a still-impressive 6000 pounds. Both models have four-wheel drive, through a single-speed transfer case. The system normally sends 52 percent of torque to the rear wheels.

Despite the greater weight, the efficiency gains for the Hybrid model look impressive, with the fuel economy estimate for the 4WD Hybrid models at a tentative 18 city, 19 highway. Just looking at the posted numbers, that places the Hybrid's improvements at nearly 40 percent in the city and about five percent on the highway versus the HEMI model. Currently the Aspen and Durango 4WD are rated 13/18 when equipped with the HEMI V-8, which already includes the MDS system, and the V-6 model, with rear-wheel drive and a four-speed automatic, gets 14 city, 19 highway.

“Combined with Chrysler's Multi-displacement System (MDS), our advanced two-mode hybrid technology immediately delivers a more than 25-percent fuel economy improvement to our full-size SUVs — and up to a 40-percent improvement in the city,” said Frank Klegon, Chrysler's product development chief, in a company release that accompanied the announcement.

Chrysler had previously been criticized for cutting a previous Durango hybrid model, under development earlier this decade and originally due in 2003. That vehicle had a mild hybrid system and lower estimated fuel efficiency than the new HEMI Hybrid, despite using a V-6 engine.

The new Hybrid models will begin arriving at showrooms next summer.

Dodge Dakota 2009

2009 Dodge Dakota
The 2009 Dodge Dakota loses its all-wheel-drive option for 2009, but sees few other changes following its 2008 freshening. This compact pickup truck comes in two body styles. Extended Cabs have a 6.4-ft cargo bed and rear-hinged back doors that do not open independently of the fronts. They seat up to five. Crew cabs have a 5.3-ft bed, conventional back doors, and seat up to six. Four trim levels are offered: base ST, mid-level Big Horn (Lone Star in Texas), off-road-ready TRX4, and top-end Laramie. Dakota's standard engine is a 210-hp 3.7-liter V6. It teams with a 6-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission. A 302-hp 4.7-liter V8 is available. The V8 comes only with a 5-speed automatic. Dakota is available with rear-wheel drive or 4-wheel drive. The 4WD system should not be left engaged on dry pavement, but it includes low-range gearing for off-road use. Maximum towing capacity is 7050 lb. Available safety features include ABS and curtain side airbags. Also available are heated cloth or leather front seats. New for 2009 is Dodge's Crate 'N Go system, which includes collapsible and removable interior storage containers. Mitsubishi sells a re-trimmed version of the Dakota as the Raider.

Dodge Charger 2009

2009 Dodge Charger

The 2009 Dodge Charger gets more available V8 power and a few new features. This 2008 Consumer Guide Best Buy large car shares its basic design with Chrysler's 300 sedan. Dodge's Magnum wagon, which also shared the Charger's basic design, has been discontinued. Charger comes in four trim levels: base SE, mid-level SXT, sporty R/T, and high-performance SRT8. All are rear-wheel drive, and all-wheel drive is available on the SXT and R/T. SE models have a 178-hp 2.7-liter V6 engine and a 4-speed automatic transmission. Optional on SE and standard on SXT is a 250-hp 3.5-liter V6; a 4-speed automatic transmission is standard with rear-wheel drive while AWD versions have a 5-speed. R/T models get a new version of Chrysler's 5.7-liter Hemi V8 with 370 hp, an increase of 30 hp over 2008 models. R/T has a 5-speed automatic and Chrysler's Multi-Displacement System cylinder deactivation. The SRT8 has a 425-hp 6.1-liter Hemi V8 and a 5-speed automatic without cylinder deactivation. Available safety features include ABS, traction control, antiskid system, curtain side airbags, and front side airbags. Optional on the R/T is the Road/Track Performance Package, which includes 20-inch wheels, performance suspension, and heated front seats. The SRT8 has unique suspension tuning, as well as specific interior and exterior trim. Newly available on the 2009 Dodge Charger is Chrysler's uconnect multimedia suite, which can include a wireless cell phone link, 30-gigabyte hard drive for storing digital music and picture files, and a navigation system with real-time traffic information.

Dodge Challenger 2009

2009 Dodge Challenger
The Dodge Challenger generated more buzz than any other new car in 2008. But it was mostly a promise unfulfilled -- Dodge only made 6,400 of the cars, in only one trim level, only for nearly $40,000, and only with an automatic transmission. That last point in particular disappointed many who had been excited by the revival of the classic muscle car. For some, it's hard to consider the new Challenger a true revival of the legendary Challengers of the late '60's and early '70's without the famous pistol-grip short-throw manual of the original.

For 2009, Dodge seeks to make right all of the '08 Challenger's sins. The new Challenger will be available in three trim levels -- a more affordable base SE trim with a V6 and a four-speed automatic, a more upscale R/T with a big V8, and an enthusiast's SRT8 with a giant Hemi. And yes, it will be available with a manual at last. A serious 6-speed transmission borrowed from the Viper, in fact, with that classic pistol-grip brought back to life.

Little else has changed. The retro-muscle exterior hasn't changed a bit, and, unfortunately, an interior that disappointed many reviewers hasn't changed much, either.
What The Auto Press Says

The 2008 Dodge Challenger was, by many measures, the most anticipated car of its year. But the automotive press saw the '08 model as a half-effort, an attempt by Chrysler to cash in on the buzz as quickly as possible, before the assembly lines were ready to produce the car in earnest. For 2009, the Challenger has finally arrived. With a full lineup of three trim levels and a considerable set of customizations available, this year marks the real debut of the car on American roads. It's a car some people will lust after, for its unabashed appeal to muscle car nostalgia, and the power of its huge V8 engines. But most of the criticism leveled at the 2008 applies to the 2009 -- for all the gutsy beauty of its exterior, its interior is disappointing. Beyond that, it may be a car whose time passed before it even arrived. With gas prices surging, will anyone really buy a 6.1-liter Hemi V8?

Here is what the press has to say about the coming 2009 Challenger:

* "With correspondingly lower prices, the less-powerful Challengers will make this pony car more accessible to the masses." - Automobile Magazine
* "Following closely on the launch of the 2008 Challenger SRT8 come the rest of the Challenger family, bowing this fall as 2009 models." - Road and Track
* "The Challenger's Achilles heel, of course, is weight. Derived from the Chrysler 300C/Dodge Charger platform, all Challengers are heavy. ... Until Ford refreshes the Mustang and Chevy gets Camaros in dealerships, though, the Challenger has the power advantage over its competition." - Motor Trend
* "Those considering the V-6 for a fuel-economy advantage will find one, albeit not a big one: 18 mpg city and 25 highway versus 15/23 for the R/T automatic and 16/23 for the R/T stick." - Car and Driver
* "The SRT is killer, the SE's better than we expected it to be, and the R/T is the one a lot of us could see ourselves rolling in. Take your pick. The Challenger's just cool." -- Autoblog

Key Details

2009 Dodge Challenger SE models will be powered by a 2.5-liter V6 making 250 horsepower, available only with a four-speed automatic transmission. R/T models will feature a more powerful, 5.7-liter V8 rated for 370 horsepower. It will be offered with an automatic or a six-speed manual gearbox. The top-of-the-line SRT8 will feature a 6.1-liter Hemi V8 rated for 425 horsepower, and the same set of transmissions as the R/T.

Fuel economy varies from 15/23 (for that big Hemi) to 18/25 (for the low-end SE model).

All Challengers are rear-wheel drive. Safety equipment includes ABS, brake assist, tire pressure monitoring and six airbags. A new hill-start assist program promises to keep manual-equipped Challengers from rolling backward when starting on an incline.

Worth noting, also, is the extensive array of customizations Chrysler's parts division, Mopar, has to offer Challenger buyers. Automobile Magazine says, "Upgrades range from basic air intake systems all the way up to revised camshafts, cylinder heads, and forged crankshafts, as well as a suspension kit that lowers the ride height, and "interior and exterior upgrades that can be fitted to any Challenger model." It will be important for Challenger shoppers not to upgrade their purchase right out of their price range.

Dodge Avenger 2009

2009 Dodge Avenger

The 2009 Dodge Avenger lineup loses its all-wheel-drive model. Otherwise, this midsize sedan is largely unchanged following its introduction for the 2008 model year. Avenger shares its basic design with the Sebring from Dodge's parent company Chrysler. SE, SXT, and sporty R/T trim levels continue for 2009. The AWD R/T has been dropped. SE and SXT come with a 173-hp 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine. A 186-hp 2.7-liter V6 is optional for SXT. R/Ts have a 235-hp 3.5-liter V6. The 2.4 and 2.7 team with a 4-speed automatic transmission, and the 3.5 uses a 6-speed automatic. R/Ts have a sport suspension. Available safety features include ABS, traction control, antiskid system, curtain side airbags, and front side airbags. Optional is Chrysler's new uconnect multimedia suite, which can include a wireless cell phone link, 30-gigabyte hard drive for storing pictures and digital music files, and a navigation system with real-time traffic information. Other options include heated and cooled cupholders, remote engine start, and leather upholstery.

Chrysler Town Country 2009

2009 Chrysler Town & Country

The 2009 Chrysler Town & Country receives new safety features and other minor updates after its redesign for 2008. Town & Country is built from the same design as the Dodge Grand Caravan but differs in trim and pricing. LX, Touring, and topline Limited models are offered. The LX has a 3.3-liter V6 and a 4-speed automatic transmission. The Touring has a 3.8-liter V6, the Limited a 4.0 V6. Touring and Limited models have a 6-speed automatic. Safety features include ABS, traction control, antiskid system, and curtain side airbags that cover all seating rows. Newly available on Touring and Limited are a blind-spot alert system and a feature Chrysler calls "Rear Cross Path." This system activates when the transmission is in reverse, and detects any traffic moving towards the vehicle. The standard seating arrangement is Chrysler's Stow 'n Go system, which has 2nd- and 3rd-row seats that fold flush into the floor. The optional Flexible Seating Group includes Chrysler's Swivel 'n Go seating. This arrangement has 2nd-row seats that rotate to face rearward, a removable table that fits between the 2nd and 3rd rows, and a flush-folding 3rd row. Options include a sunroof, DVD entertainment, and heated 1st- and 2nd-row seats. Also available is Chrysler's uconnect multimedia suite, which can include a 30-gigabyte hard drive that can hold music or picture files, a wireless cell phone link, satellite radio, a navigation system with real-time traffic information, and a satellite TV system which broadcasts kid-friendly TV programming on the DVD entertainment screens.

Chrysler Sebring 2009

2009 Chrysler Sebring
The 2008 Chrysler Sebring ranks 21 out of 23 Affordable Midsize Cars. This ranking is based on our analysis of 65 published reviews and test drives of the Chrysler Sebring, and our analysis of reliability and safety data.

The Sebring has impressive interior features and a comfortable cabin, but does not provide the driving performance or overall refinement of other cars in its class.

Many reviewers say the Sebring is a good affordable midsize car, but they also point out its shortcomings. It doesn't have the most impressive cabin materials or the most thrilling engine performance, and even unique interior features like the MyGIG infotainment system or the option for a convertible Sebring aren't enough to compete with the top-class cars. However, if you purchase a Sebring now, you can receive a $2.99-a-gallon gas card for fill- ups for the first three years or 12,000 miles.

The 2008 Chrysler Sebring comes as a four-door sedan with three trims -- the base, Touring and Limited. The Chrysler Sebring also comes as a two-door convertible with a hard or soft top.

* "The new Sebring is hands-down better, for cabin space, overall styling, interior trim and functionality." -- AutoWeek
* "I'd be pleased if I got off an airplane and found the Sebring waiting for me in the parking lot. I'm just not sure I'd want it to follow me all the way home." -- U.S. News
* "Performance and quality levels are finally in line with those of the average Japanese mid-size four-door, albeit one from seven or eight years ago." -- Automobile Magazine
* "Just being 'good enough' no longer makes the cut. It also helps to stay current with the competition's generational cycle, and the Sebring was falling short in both regards." -- New Car Test Drive
* "This Sebring is a logical choice for families seeking a moderately priced, moderate-size, four-door passenger car." -- Sacramento Bee
* "If you're tired of look-alike cars and just want something different, then the Sebring may could be the car for you -- just be sure to take a very long test drive before you sign on the dotted line." -- About.com

Sebring Performance - 6.5 (Mediocre)
The 2008 Chrysler Sebring is not considered a performance vehicle, but test drivers found a comfort-oriented, soft ride designed for cruising. As Car and Driver points out, the Sebring offers "adequate performance on the boulevard but not on back roads." Our full Performance Review gives a clearer picture of the new Sebring's performance capabilities.

Sebring Exterior - 7.3 (Good)
Taking styling cues from the Chrysler Crossfire, the Sebring sedan was updated for the 2007 model year. But mostly positive views of the new style are peppered with the odd complaint. Some reviews say they appreciate the Sebring's more aggressive look, but Automobile Magazine calls the styling "divisive at best."

Sebring Interior - 7.2 (Good)
Most automotive writers commend the 2008 Sebring's interior for its modernity and spaciousness. Check out our Chrysler Sebring Photo Gallery for up-close images of the Sebring's upholstery, gauges and steering wheel, or continue with our full Interior Review to learn more about the Sebring's optional MyGIG multimedia infotainment system.

Sebring Safety - 9.5 (Excellent)
The 2008 Chrysler Sebring does very well in federal government crash tests, but has not been crash tested by the insurance industry. Our full Safety Review gives the run down of test ratings and standard safety equipment for the Sebring.

Sebring Reliability - 4.0 (Mediocre)
The 2008 Chrysler Sebring reliability score shown is the Predicted Reliability rating provided by J.D. Power and Associates. This score is based on trending the past three years of historical initial quality and dependability data from J.D. Power's automotive studies, specifically the Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS) and the Initial Quality Study (IQS). Chrysler offers a standard warranty for the Sebring that's good for the first three years or 36,000 miles. Continue with our full Reliability Review for more information on the Sebring's warranty.

Chrysler PT Cruiser 2009

2009 Chrysler PT Cruiser
The 2009 Chrysler PT Cruiser loses its convertible body style. This retro-styled compact car comes as a five-passenger, 4-door wagon in Base, Touring, and Limited trims. PT Cruisers have a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine. Base and Touring versions have 150 hp. Limiteds are turbocharged and have 180 hp. The Base offers manual or automatic transmission. Touring and Limited models come with automatic only. Available safety features include ABS, traction control, and front side airbags.

Chrysler Aspen 2009

2009 Chrysler Aspen
Chrysler pulled the wraps off of two hybrid SUVs at the 2007 L.A. Auto show, and the big news is that they'll both use the automaker's legendary Hemi engines. The Aspen Hybrid will employ a 5.7-liter V8 engine and two-mode hybrid system that is not altogether different from the powertrain underpinning the Escalade and Silverado Hybrids, allowing the Aspen to run just on electric power, just on gas power, or use both propulsion sources simultaneously. Maximum output is 385 horsepower.

A "Multiple-displacement system" further conserves fuel by allowing the Aspen Hybrid to operate on fewer engine cylinders during light operation. Its fuel efficiency should improve by 40 percent in city driving and by 25 percent on the highway, and it will be able to tow a maximum of 6,000 pounds.

Inside, the Aspen Hybrid will crib from the manufacturer's Town and Country minivan, with a MyGIG entertainment system, rear DVD screen, power accessory outlets galore, and multiple seating configurations, including a 60/40 split-folding third-row seat. A host of safety features include an Electronic Stability Program, a back-up camera, and side-curtain airbags for all three rows.

Chrysler 300-Series 2009

2009 Chrysler 300-Series
The 2008 Chrysler 300 Series ranks 2 out of 9 Affordable Large Cars. This ranking is based on our analysis of 74 published reviews and test drives of the Chrysler 300 Series, and our analysis of reliability and safety data.

The 300 brings commanding exterior styling, vast interior room and a top-notch V8 trim with competitive pricing. It loses points for a fairly low safety rating compared to its competition, and Chrysler's mixed reliability reputation.

The 2008 Chrysler 300 has quickly become a cultural icon, one of those rare cars that alter our perception of an automaker. It's a car people hope to buy someday, for its classic retro styling and all-American appeal. While all trim levels provide capable handling, the 300 C and SRT8 trims have particularly powerful acceleration -- but the flip side is a drop in fuel economy -- and even in its least expensive trims, the 300 is no fuel-sipper. Automobile Magazine says "the 300 has collected an impressive array of awards and become a true sales success. This is the classic large-sedan formula -- wrapped in provocative sheetmetal and offered at an attractive price that Americans have always loved." Reviewers consistently note that the 300's appeal is in its American make and status-symbol potential, reviving styling and appeal of classic sedans. When the design was new in 2005, Motor Trend named it Car of the Year, praising its unique look for "redefin[ing] what the American sedan can and should be." Since the 300 was introduced three years ago and remains largely the same car today, some material in this review may date back as far as 2005.

For 2008, a few upgrades arrive. Softer surfaces and a reconfigured instrument panel should help address some reviewers' complaints about the cabin. The sheetmetal has undergone a mild refresh. Side airbags are now available, and a few luxury options, like Sirius Backseat TV and a MyGig hard-drive based entertainment, have been added.

Despite the updates, Chrysler is struggling to sell 300s. The brand's image as the home of big, powerful V8s can't be helping in a year of soaring gas prices.

If you're in the market for a large car, you should also consider the top-rated Toyota Avalon or if it's the 300's power and distinctive look that attract you, consider the muscular four-door Dodge Charger.

* "It may even turn out to be a product that defines a new automotive epoch. In short, the bracingly different 300 makes us excited again about American family cars." -- Detroit News
* "E-Class suspension, stability control, five-speed transmission and a stomping V-8, all with a cabin that's bigger than an E-Class for about $20,000 less than that Mercedes and priced competitively against other competitors. Why the heck wouldn't you want this car?" -- Forbes
* "The hemi-powered 300C tops off at close to $35,000, which is luxury-car territory. So it should be awfully good. That surprise is that it is." -- U.S. News
* "This is the classic large-sedan formula-wrapped in provocative sheetmetal and offered at an attractive price that Americans have always loved." -- Automobile Magazine
* "Chrysler's hot-selling 300 is a car that redefines what the American sedan can and should be, and its popularity is cutting a wide path in the marketplace." -- Motor Trend
* "All in all, the 300C is an impressive car at an appealing price. ... We're not suggesting it's the equal of a BMW 545i or Mercedes-Benz E500, but it's about a Honda Civic less expensive." -- Road and Track
* "The risky styling, the pricing, the catalog of engines and options-it all makes the 300C the most interesting sedan to roll out of Detroit since" the early 1990's. --Car and Driver
* "A landmark for Chrysler and the American auto industry."--The Auto Channel
* "Owners almost unanimously find the car exceeds their expectations in performance, quality and value."--AutoWeek

300-Series Performance - 8.0 (Very Good)

The 2008 Chrysler 300 is available with four different engines, so reviews of the car's performance differ widely depending on which trim level a reviewer drove. Most agree that the car handles well for such a large sedan and offers a smooth ride. Automobile Magazine summarize consensus by saying that the base 300 "is a bit underpowered, but the mid-level 300s deliver the right amount of performance for most consumers at an attractive price point." Big V8s are offered in the higher trim levels, with a 5.7-liter Hemi winning praise in the 300C. Continue with our full Performance Review to compare the trims, and read about the performance-oriented SRT8 and the monster 6.1-liter V8 that propels it from 0-60 mph in 5 seconds.

300-Series Exterior - 8.9 (Very Good)
If you're reading about this car, chances are, you were attracted by some of the most distinctive sheetmetal on American roads. The Chrysler 300's one-of-a-kind look is the main reason people buy it, and reviewers haven't missed that fact. The Detroit News says, "Nearly everything about" 300 "is imposing. But somehow it all works, and works quite well." USA Today calls it "unbelievably, dramatically good-looking, as the boldest American cars once were." Check out the Chrysler 300 Photo Gallery to see what you really came here for, or continue with our full Exterior Review to read about the most bold and unashamed use of chrome since the 1950's, and how well it seems to work.

300-Series Interior - 8.0 (Very Good)
Comfortably seating four or even five adults, the 2008 Chrysler 300 has vast interior space without sacrificing style, though some interior materials lack quality finish. Automobile Magazine says that the "first thing you'll notice about the 300 interior is that it's huge, a real nod to those monstrous American sedans of the 1960s and 1970s." See the spacious cabin for yourself in our Chrysler 300 Photo Gallery, or continue with our full Interior Review to read how Chrysler has attempted to upgrade the interior fit and finish of the 300 -- and whether or not they pulled it off.

300-Series Safety - 7.6 (Good)
Safety is a a slight weak point of the 2008 Chrysler 300. The 300 does well in federal government crash tests, but some reviewers complain of limited visibility. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gives the 2008 a top rating of "Good" in frontal offset testing, but only a "Marginal" grade for side impact testing, in part because side curtain air bags are a costly option. Continue with our full Safety Review for a complete summary of the 300's safety features, including a few that will cost you extra on the Chrysler, but not on its competition.

300-Series Reliability - 5.0 (Mediocre)
The 2008 Chrysler 300 Series reliability score shown is the Predicted Reliability rating provided by J.D. Power and Associates. This score is based on trending the past three years of historical initial quality and dependability data from J.D. Power's automotive studies, specifically the Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS) and the Initial Quality Study (IQS). The 2008 Chrysler 300 comes with a three-year/36,000-mile basic warranty. Continue with our full Reliability Review to learn about Chrysler's mixed reliability record, and the limitations on the 300's unique warranty.
